How to break the news of redundancy and be human?

According to seek 1/3 (32%) of redundancies came as a complete surprise. https://lnkd.in/gGeiS-w

I spoke to a manager yesterday who needed to give the news of redundancy to some staff. I could tell it was tough.

So how to break bad news?

1/ Prepare and be clear on the message
People like to know where they stand. Think about the message you are delivering and explain the clear reasons for the change.

2/ Listen
People won't respond the same. Be prepared to listen to the variety of responses from shock, anger to some people being mentally prepared. Check in and ask are they ok?

3/ Communicate available support
Prepare a list of services available for topics such as financial advice and any counselling (if appropriate). If the firm can afford it, investigate outplacement support to help smooth the transition

4/ Support yourself
Giving people bad news can be tough. It is never easy to tell someone they no longer required. Give yourself the time and space to process, and if required - get support for yourself.

How do you like bad news broken to you? Leave a comment.
